Tales of a Highwayman

The good stuff is off the exits.

Camping, two-lane highways, and small towns through Nebraska and Wyoming—from the Missouri River to the Tetons.

The Routes

Four highways I keep coming back to. Each one beats the 80 for scenery—and loses to it by an hour or three. Worth it.

Trent's outdoor office on a morning runBUILDING IN PUBLIC

Someone noticed my Strava: 8+ miles, 3-4x a week. Where do I find the time? I'm working. I talk, my Grok Bot team executes. Speaking is 3x faster than typing (Stanford). Off-screen is where strategy happens. My office this morning:

There's a man I pass almost every morning at the lake. I don't know his name. But I know his bike, his wave, and that he'll be there. Fluorescent yellow, head to toe. Five or ten people like him. The ones who keep showing up. What are you a regular at? https://youtu.be/opIDkzQwTcE

Weathered wooden grave marker reading Unknown, with the words If that board had your name on itOGALLALA, NE

Sep 14

Every morning this summer my walk has gone past Boot Hill in Ogallala. One board says only "Unknown." One has a name, age 19, and one word for how it ended. Not how we die. Whether anyone can tell what we stood for. Made this week's video on that hill, with my own pictures. https://youtu.be/7fKjp1KNQ4Q

Aug 16

My dad moved us to a small Nebraska town with no dental practice waiting. Just one friend who wanted him there. He didn't become a small town dentist. He had that job day one. He became "Doc Minneman". Nobody hands you that. The town decided it, out of everything they watched him do and the care he demonstrated. Check out this week's video for the "rest of the story" https://youtu.be/oJxp_4Sk-U0

Friday 1:15pm: I pitched a business idea to AI. Saturday morning: live site, CRM, analytics, dev environment, a 3-email drip campaign, and a working Stripe checkout. ~16.5 working hours. One human, one AI. ~$5/mo in new costs. 90% on my phone, while staining my deck. Receipts

Strava morning walk photo of the horizon in Omaha, 7.30 milesMORNING WALK

May 2

This morning's ruminations centered around vision. Both figuratively and literally. Since I spend most of my days staring at a screen, I try to focus on eye health on my walks. No glasses, eyes on the horizon. We live at or near the highest elevation in Omaha, so there's plenty of horizon to work with. Focusing that far out gets you past the everyday tasks and short-term goals. Where do you want to go? Who do you want to be? What do you want people to say and feel about you when you're gone? That's Vision. Habakkuk 2:2: "Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it." https://strava.app.link/3aQAVEjzO2b

the highwayman

Most of my life, an hour from the 80.

I'm Trent. Wichita patrol cars, Omaha server rooms, church offices—all of it along the I-80 corridor. Life Off 80 is the other side: the exits I take when the week is over, the two-lane highways, and the campsites between the Missouri River and the Tetons.

Expect camp cooking, route notes, small-town diners, and a lot of Nebraska sky. Less cowboy, more campfire.
